I had a smile on my face constantly while listening to this book. Good that he switched careers, he's such a talented comedian! Great read/listen.
I don't ever laugh in 'comedy' books, but I genuinely laughed out loud during this book and occasionally wanted to cry.
An amazing insight into doctor life, had me doing kegels while I read

Absolutely loved this audiobook - it was hilarious, maddening, hopeless and hopeful all at the same time.
Anyone who thinks public health doesn't matter should read/listen to this, it's so important. The anecdotes and stories were funny, and sometimes traumatic, but the exposing of what it's like working for the NHS made me so sad and angry - still Adam Kay hasn't lost hope in public health/the NHS and he lived it. I think the fact he read the audiobook made all the difference. Definitely recommend, and gave me even more appreciation for those that dedicate their lives to this type of work.

"All junior doctors at the hospital have been asked to sign a document opting out of the European Working Time Directive because our contracts are noncompliant with it. This week I have seen H for under two hours and worked for a grand total of ninety-seven. Noncompliant doesn’t quite seem to cover it. My contract has taken the directive, dragged it screaming from its bed in the dead of night, and waterboarded it."
This is a collection of diary entries written by a junior doctor (the UK equivalent of a medical intern, resident, or fellow) and one would expect it to be a dry document full of arcane medical terminology, but pleasantly this is the funniest book I have read in a very long time. Many of the witty anecdotes in this book are short and could act as standalone tweets written by a parody
Most people don't need convincing that medical doctors are vital to the functioning of society, but often their emotional experience is ignored and how the medical system treats them is a topic not discussed enough (probably because as Kay cleverly remarks doctors are too busy working). Kay brings light to these injustices which can be just about as difficult to face as medical wounds, but the dark humor makes the medicine go down in a more delightful way.
A quick read and well written. Not for the squeamish…but very funny whilst being a massive eye opener in to the ridiculous hours Doctors work and the lack of support they receive…often from hospital management bureaucrats but mainly from politicians. The NHS is the most valuable thing the British have…yet politicians constantly undermine it. It’s survival must be fought for because god help Britain if it goes the way of the US system and in to the vice grip of insurance companies.

"Even though they’ve got a stethoscope round their neck and a decent line in gallows humour, they’re still just that teenager who arbitrarily put a tick next to ‘medicine’ on their UCAS form. Just a human as fragile as anyone"
a really important read. funny and heartbreaking

A complete must read, especially for anyone British
It made me really horrified with how poorly NHS doctors are treated and how amazing they are at their jobs
It was super funny too and I got to scare my husband by reading out certain paragraphs
