Dickens has a way of writing characters that makes them so full of life and in this book on particular so hilarious that you can imagine the modern day equivalent being just as funny and well received. In fact it feels so very before his time in a way. But boy I loved this. The characters and their scrapes and situations as well as the more serious message behind the debtors prison and wealth inequality make this so interesting to read. Sam Weller has to be my favourite character. But who cannot love the loveable old Mr Pickwick who made it all happen.

An absolute shambles of a book. Rambling, disjointed, digressive, and chock-full of absurdity... what was he thinking.
4* instead of 5* because truth be told the first third is a bit dire whilst he finds his feet. But after the introduction of the mighty Sam Weller, and beyond that to the great Bardell v. Pickwick trial and the subsequent episodes in The Fleet (the highlight IMHO) you start to see the great man in his stride. Just don't start with this as your intro into the world of Dickens.

The best part of the book are the Christmas chapters, as happy and crowded as a Grandma Moses painting, and can be read alone. The  rambling title is "A Good-Humoured Christmas Chapter, Containing an Account of a Wedding, and Some other Sports Beside, which Although in Their Way, Even as Good Customs as Marriage Itself, are not Quite so Religiously Kept up, in these Degenerate Times.">

I wasn't expecting to love this, but I did! Dickens is funny, dark and satirical.

After Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations, it's nice to see the humorous--nay, hilarious--side of Dickens. I just wish there were more of a plot for me to chew on.
