Really strong first half, falls slightly short in the part immediately following it and I have mixed feelings about the ending but am ultimately satisfied with it.

I went back and forth on how to rate this. In some senses, it's a 5, easily.

It was quite an odd book. I liked it, but it was very strange. I can't put my finger on it

Ishiguro spins up a believable future where humans keep humanoid robots and the line between humanity and artificial intelligence becomes blurred. Like many technologies, the robots have a golden period where an older, less capable model becomes a cult classic. Klara is one of these. She represents the best case scenario for how ai could serve humans meanwhile there are other examples of less desirable outcomes. Technological revolutions are messy. Fiction like this helps us process the good and bad of what might come.

Read this because a cute girl suggested that I should she was right. Riveting. Made me feel smart. Got ghosted. Reminded me of the film Poor Things.
