This was a very sweet book about Jude, a refugee from Syria who must go live with her uncle in Cincinnati. Her pregnant mother joins her in America but they must leave the father and brother behind. The entire book is told in prose. There is also a part that addresses the treatment of Muslims in America after 9/11.
So good! We need more middle grade books with muslim girls and immigrants talking about the experience of missing home and finding a new home. Warga does such a great job with the secondary characters as well, how both Layla and Sarah struggle with identity and wanting to connect to the home their parents know but they never will.

A great coming of age story that also details what it’s like to try to grow up while in a totally new country, learning a new language. Beautifully written and the verse calls to one’s soul. I cried more times than I want to admit.

I finished this book in nearly one sitting, it is a lovely and quick read. I have never read anything like this with its lyrical nature. Just like the author wishes she had more books like this to look up to when she was young, I also wish I had more books like this to learn about other cultures instead of feeding into the stereotypes that America has created. This shows the importance of diversity in literature and I will keep books like this on our shelves for my children to read when they are older.
