You have to suspend your disbelief on this one. There were many times that I was like- meh, I don’t think that was how they would do that in real life.

That being said it wasn’t horrible. I personally was enjoying it more when it was following along the lines of campy horror. Watching someone descend into madness is less fun.

There were times when plot points were missed, or people started acting very out of character, that had me stop and question everything, and not in a good way.

This book really just focuses on the importance of not lying lol. The adults in this book were really lacking and communicating seemed hard for everyone. Overall though it was interesting enough and I finished it. I would recommend if for people who enjoyed There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins.

This book was good but I couldn’t stand this relationship at all. A lot of codependency mixed with narcissistic tendencies and it just didn’t work for me. The book started out slow and took awhile to get into but I’m glad I read it all the way through. Trying to guess what happened and what was going to happen was fun and although I wasn’t correct I feel the big twist didn’t satisfy me how I would’ve liked. Nonetheless the book was alright.

I want to begin this with I enjoyed some aspects of this book. The twist was good and the thriller aspect of this book was done well. I really hope this author writes more thrillers because she is very talented and shows promise. The relationship between Sloan and Cherry is what hurts this book. It's a toxic relationship and I did not enjoy that aspect of this book. Overall, this book was worth the read. Special Thank You to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy of this book prior to publication.

Thank you so much to Penguin Random House International and Kaleidoscopic Tours for sending me a copy of ‘The Last Girls Standing’ by Jennifer Dugan and for allowing me to take part in the blog tour for this novel!

I’m probably a little too old now to be considered a young adult and I generally don’t read much YA fiction anymore, but I definitely still enjoy YA thrillers! ‘The Last Girls Standing’ is a queer YA psychological thriller which builds on the final girls trope of the horror genre. Sloan and Cherry survive a horrific mass murder whilst working at a summer camp, an experience which adds a sudden depth to their burgeoning relationship. In the aftermath, it’s clear that Sloan is struggling to reconcile the person she was before the attack with the person she has become, made even more difficult by the gaps in her memory of that awful night. After spotting some similarities between the animal masks worn by the murderers and a rabbit carving made by Cherry’s late father, Sloan begins to fear that Cherry may somehow be connected to the crime. Cherry’s efforts to reassure her girlfriend definitely do come across as gaslighting, and there were moments where I felt so angry with Cherry for her insensitivity towards Sloan. But as the novel progressed it made me question who was telling the truth and what had actually happened that fateful night. I found this novel very easy to read and was hooked pretty much from the start, which was refreshing after my reading slump in August. There were a few plot points which I felt were quite predictable, and I felt like Sloan often missed details which seemed pretty obvious to me, but overall I really enjoyed this book! I was also very interested in the discussions on cults, environmental issues and doomsday fear-mongering interwoven into the novel.

Rating: ★★★★

I had high hopes for this book but ultimately it fell a little flat for me. While I was eager to see how the story was going to go, some parts of the book really dragged.
