Alderman flips gendered power dynamics on its head in this new world where women have the ability to electrocute people with their “skein”. What I love is that the author highlights what power can do to us - elevate us to new positions of power, change us, make us stronger, but also bring out the worst in us. Some women become overtly violent - rapists, and some women begin exercising their power in subtle ways - by taking credit for a man’s work. It very much felt like a Black Mirror episode by making an exaggeration of how things are in today’s society to point out some dark truths.

Leaves you thinking about where the world is really going and what are the true consequences of extremistic movements. Not easy to read, very disturbing sometimes, the plot was good but had a lot more potential for development. Margaret Atwood is still the queen of dystopian novels.

A complete reversal of our current gender hierarchy, The Power is unsettling in a way that throws many of our society's transgressions against women into sharp relief.
