Maybe this is just a sign that I'm getting old, but I found this book's relentless pace more exhausting than exhilarating. Unfortunately, the real victim was character development. McKinney gives us so many intriguing revelations and developments throughout the first two books, and even some in this one, and then they just... never go anywhere. I don't mind when a series ends with loose ends, but these felt forgotten more than left deliberately open, and I felt frustrated about that.
Especially since once of those loose ends, the lack of resolution to the love pentagon, severly undercuts the casually baked-in queerness that I was so enjoying in this series.

Also, I don't know if this was a National Novel Writing Month effort, like the first book was, but it's littered with the kind of mistakes and weirdness that happens when someone churns out 50,000 words fast. Characters called by the wrong names, misspelled names, royal titles used incorrectly, sentences with convoluted structures that feel chosen solely because they're a few words longer than the more conventional way. Every NaNo participant does stuff like this. But it should've been caught, either by McKinney in a later draft, or for sure by a Feiwel and Friends copyeditor.
