I was really gripped by this book. Very pertinent to the terrible events happening all over the world today. And at its heart a book about family and love and the things people will do to keep what feels most familiar and safe, sometimes at a deadly cost. At points it was almost too sad and frustrating but absolutely worth the read and well crafted. It lends itself to audiobook very well too.

One of the best books I’ve ever read. I truly was in awe of the writing, the story, the way the characters broke me apart. This book is a lessen in why fiction is so important. Lynch is so deserving of the Booker Prize. I won’t be able to stop thinking about this book. I won’t be able to stop suggesting to people!

The text is beautiful, and creates tension, but it is difficult to read - although it gets easier with practice. I don't know if the beauty justifes the barrier to comprehension.

I was so angry with Eilish for not attempting to leave at once. I was so frustrated the whole book- but I get that is the point. This happens to thousands of people around the world.

Pride and resentment towards her sister is one of the reasons she doesn't leave which was that irrational personal emotions overshadowing the reality of what was happening in Dublin. And the reality of her sister just loving her and wanting Eilish safe.

One thing that I felt wasn’t very developed was Eilish as a working woman. Her job, her career, was an unimportant footnote. It doesn't help her shed light on what is going on - as a Scientist my response to the pandemic for instance was to obsess over statistics - nor her thought patterns, nor even the plot appart from her getting fired.

I liked the modern setting with use of phoned.
