I liked the prologue with the father in the mountains. Then came Chapter One.
I cannot lie. I did not enjoy this at first.
The putupon sister, the abused brother were so been there done that in the beginning. I did not see the point. I was exasperated with the repetition. It's not new ground they're treading. It honestly felt condescending how much was hammered over and over.
Hence, the first half was boring and dragged. But I got an ARC and didn't want to DNF. I was so close to doing so anyways. Then shit finally started happening!!
The Owl Mothers. The Covey. The attacks, the switching of POV's, it started popping off the page and I couldn't wait to see what happened next.
I was impressed with some twists and the ending. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel. What a turn around.
I still say the first half can be shortened by half easily without repetition, better use of flashbacks, and maybe a prologue if you're really insistent. But YMMV.
If you can get through that long ramp up, I say it's worth it. Unless you're already into birds and the previews are your thing, borrow from your library or get it on sale.

What a great book!
I met Mr. London at an author event in PA and picked up his book before meeting him. I'm so glad that I did.
Mr. London did extensive research into birds of prey, even as far as visiting a falconer in PA. I loved reading about the different types of birds he mentions in the book and then looking them up online to see what they looked like. I found this book to be very educational in that respect.
I also loved the characters. The twins, Kylee and Brysen, are so devoted to each other but you can obviously see where being siblings takes its toll. Then you have one who may or may not be more skilled than the other and you have a real conflict.
I'm interested in seeing how the things play out with the enemy, the Kartami. I'm especially interested in how things go with the Owl Mothers (I'm fascinated with owls 🦉).
Can't wait to read the next installment!

¡No saben las ganas que tenía de leer este libro! ¿Y el

UNA LISTA DE COSAS QUE AMÉ POR COMPLETO:
➸ ¡Es una historia de hermanos! Ya saben que adoro encontrar libros que exploran otro tipo de relaciones humanas además del romance, y Una Furia de Alas Negras es uno de esos. Sin embargo, estoy sumamente emocionada de poder decir que, en mi opinión, esta historia explora mucho más que la relación entre un par de gemelos. Para mí, este fue un libro que exploró la complejidad de los vínculos que pueden unir a dos personas más allá de lo que podemos describir.
➸ ¡Unos temas increíblemente interesantes! Tal vez todas las facetas de la historia de Alex London se vuelven todavía más únicas debido al escenario y a los temas que explora en su libro. Este es un relato de supervivencia, de tiempos de guerra y tensiones constantes. No solo amé visualizar todo esto en una novela juvenil, sino que mi parte favorita fue observar cómo estas situaciones influyen en la historia.
➸ LA ESCRITURA ES UNA ORO. Esta es oficialmente mi parte favorita de Una Furia de Alas Negras. Si tuviera que darles una sola razón por la que leer esta novela, elegiría la escritura de Alex London. Vi que una autora describió este libro como "hipnótico y envolvente de principio a fin... cautivante y estremecedor". Honestamente, esas 10 palabras resumen lo que la pluma de London tiene el poder de crear. ¡SU PROSA ME DEJÓ BOQUIABIERTA! Me pareció muy... diferente a lo usual. Fuera de lo común. Distintiva. Especial. No lograba encontrar la magia exacta en sus palabras, pero la sentía vibrar con el pasar de las páginas <3.
➸ ¡Se lee súper rápido! Vamos, que me leí esta novela en un sólo día.
➸ ¡Es un giro muy original dentro de la fantasía juvenil! Creo que la base de Una Furia de Alas Negras en sí es un gran cliché, pero lo que London hace a partir de ello es impactante. Vale la pena para lxs amantes de la fantasía <3. ¡O-R-I-G-I-N-A-L!
Pero no todo me gustó. Es más, creo que esta novela apuntaba a las 5 estrellas para mí, pero fueron algunas cosas las que me hicieron quitarle 2 estrellitas. No es que el libro no haya estado a la altura de una puntuación máxima (al menos de mi parte), sino que elegí quitarle esa oportunidad :(
➸ ¿Y eso de una historia de amor LGBTQ+? ESTO. ME. ENOJÓ. MUCHO. Siento que la comunidad lectora online ha catalogado esta lectura como una buena representación de un romance LGBTQ+. Vamos, que yo estaba feliz de incluir esta lectura en mi TRB del Mes del Orgullo. Pero... ¿y el romance? ¡No lo encontré por ningún lado! De historia de amor no había mucho en realidad, y de LGBTQ+ solo había una etiqueta y cero exploración del tema. Y como digo siempre, utilizar la etiqueta "diversidad" y dejarla ahí colgando para que tu libro brille con mayor intensidad ES PROBLEMÁTICO.
➸ Siento que la ambientación fue bastante misógina. Listo. Lo dije.
