I liked the book a lot at first. The sisters' struggles and dreams were relatable, the bear seemed both exciting and dangerous. But as the story went on and the sisters' relationship grew more fraught, their mother's health deteriorated, and the dangers mounted (the bear, their debt, the law, other people, etc.), things become more uncomfortable--for them and for me-and I'm ultimately not sure how I felt about it all.

Slow burn but great plot, inspired by the Brothers Grimm Snow White. I’m not going to lie I think the publisher of this book sent advanced copies to the wrongggg audience because it has a done of bad early reviewed that I don’t think it deserves

One of those books where I want someone to be sitting next to me and finishing it at the exact same moment I did, so we can turn to each other and ask "what just happened? what do you think of the ending? what's your interpretation?"
I finished it in a day, not quite a single sitting, because my husband made me dinner and I had to stop reading to eat, but I devoured this novel.

umm…… ?

Enthralling novel about two San Juan Island sisters dealing with their mother’s terminal illness, perpetual money worries, and a bear who shows up. I liked this one a lot - enjoyed the story, the complex relationships, and the deft amping of dramatic tension. I found myself speaking to the characters as I listened to the book - a sign that I was really into in. The local (to me) feeling was affecting too - I live on a different island in the Puget Sound and often find myself on the ferries that feature prominently in this book. The class struggle she writes about is very present here, and opened my eyes a bit more to it. Really liked the writing - poignant and very efficient. The way the author skillfully interleaves character inner voice and dialogue is often moving, sometimes riveting. Worth a read.

Been reading a lot of books about sisters apparently. I really enjoyed this one - Sam, the main character,  has the emotional capacity of a 16 year old and yet I found her narration interesting and complicated and filled with grief and longing and a classic younger sibling vibe.
Elena, the older sister, was dumb as hell
. I rec!!
