Use this book for fun, as background to all the great adaptations, and/or as a master class in writing, particularly characters and plotting. In many ways Austen uses (and maybe invents?) trucks of the modern mystery novel. So don't "spoiler" the mysteries for yourself if this would be your first I troduction to the story. Let it surprise you, then read it again later and let her techniques delight you.

Austen shifts from having a main character we're supposed to identify with and problematic characters all around her, to the main character being the problem. It's brilliantly done, in centering on a truly "clueless" consciousness while giving us all the clues we need to puzzle out the story.
I don't hate Emma, I'm too prone to her faults myself, except I wish she were less snobbishly preoccupied with social class. But that's a given in Austen, people must stay In Their Place or the world will Fall Apart.
Emma is also different from previous Austen heroines in not needing to marry for financial security, but she has an alter ego, Jane Fairfax, who does...

I liked this book a lot, I just didn't love it. It is a rather slow-paced book, with all of it's teas and parties and other socialites. Emma is very naive at the beginning of this story but grows to be wiser and better. She learns valuable life lessons; and consequently, so does the reader. These lessons include: respecting your elders, not messing in other people's love lives, and Price Charming isn't always who you think it is going to be.
