Why did I let this book sit on my shelves for 6 months before starting it? I'm so mad at past-Carrie because it was incredible. This was a beautiful YA story. Every time Yadriel was misgendered I was ready to throw hands. 😡 Seeing him go through this journey was fantastic. I laughed, I cried, and I got mad at fictional characters... but I also cheered so hard for other fictional characters. This was everything I wanted from a paranormal YA.
Moderate: Animal death, Death, Sexism, Transphobia, Violence, Death of parent, and Murder
Minor: Deadnaming, Fatphobia, and Deportation

“Why do you have to prove anything to anyone?"
"It's just how it is, how it's always been. In order for them to let me be a brujo—"
"You don't need anyone's permission to be you, Yads”

For instance, I would’ve loved it if Julian’s circle of friends (who we meet briefly but don’t get a chance to really know) could’ve been fleshed out a bit more, but I wouldn’t say that the story necessarily feels lacking as is. Just that it had the opportunity for a strong “found-family” element, but doesn’t quite get there.
