reading YA novels are no longer a part of my routine but whenever i stumble upon an interesting find, i make it part of my reading journey. imagine my surprise when that story centers around a queer Latinx, trans masc brujo. a member of a tight knit Los Angeles brujx community, Yadriel is doing his best to be accepted by his people. in his journey together with his best friend Maritza, they accidentally befriend a spirit named Julian. together, they conquer each of the challenges they are facing with the same amount of courage and strength any trans person possesses. this was the first time i’ve read a book staring a teenage trans boy and i’m so excited to read more novels like this in the future.

I liked the characters in this book--their conflicts felt real with one another and there was good interaction. I didn't love the plot--it was kind of boring for the first 9 hours. It's a mystery, but the mystery was not there. If this was solely a book about falling in love, it would be good. But I didn't feel the mystery. I wish there was more spookiness throughout. More mythos about the big bad guy, not just one story.

That happened a lot. One thing was mentioned once and I knew the ending would use that because why would you mention that elsewise.

It was good, just maybe not for me.

Oh also: I think Elatsoe was a great book, and might be a better version of this one. Try it out

a beautiful book that embraces and celebrates a young trans latino boy — a rarely explored demographic in mainstream media — on a journey to acceptance from his family and community. though it reads as YA, i found it gripping and hard to put down, with strong emotion throughout and a beautiful story of friendship and family. i found myself wanting to read the whole thing as fast as possible!
i kind of knew something was up with tio about halfway through the book, when lita was re mentioning the jaguar story. though i suspected it was him, it didn’t ruin the rest of the story in any way. i also fully just started crying when i read the passage about julian crossing out yadriel’s deadname and replacing it with his real name :’)

First of all, the cover is beautiful

Perhaps more importantly, I loved everything about this book, from the vibrancy of the characters to the pacing of the storyline. The ending was perfect too, and just like the rest of the book it was bittersweet and hopeful and full of love

Why do you have to prove anything to anyone?"

"It's just how it is, how it's always been. In order for them to let me be a brujo—"

"You don't need anyone's permission to be you, Yads
