Classic Christie

This is my absolute favourite book from Agatha Christie. This was the book that made me realize I had to pay attention to every single word that was written because a great author would make each of them count.

What I appreciate the uttermost about Christie is the fact that all her books reflect an insane level of effort & dedication to her craft. There is not a single instance in which you might find her not trying to produce a good story. I cannot speak of her personal motives—how wonderful it would be to thank her for all the wonderful stories she has given me to read—but her work is reflective of her skill & her forethought.

While reading this book I had taken the approach of paying attention. I have decent memory recall & enjoy reading mysteries which require me to piece together dialogue, events, slit movements, etc. because it allows me to work for the reveal—I have to be present of mind. I thought I had a decent understanding of the characters in this book & where they stood in terms of the plot as a whole & yet, I was wrong.

When I tell you that I was shocked when I realized what very minute detail revealed the entirety of the time, I mean to say that I was absolutely dumbfounded. I admit, if you hold more knowledge than I in said department, one which I shall not reveal for the sake of spoilers, you may easily deduce the twist. That being said, I am confident that this story will still find enjoyable for you.

What a superbly fantastic book.

Miss Marple never disappoints. And for that I am grateful.

It was okay. I enjoy Marple, but this didn't really hold my attention.

"Voló la telaraña y flotó lejos.
El espejo se rajó de parte a parte;
-La maldición ha caído sobre mí -exclamó
la dama de Shalott". (247).

mysterious slow-paced

Both the surprisingly genuine depiction of being old and the really inventive and clever and sympathetic murder motive here elevate this above the average mystery. Negatives are an ending where a few things suddenly happen that aren't really given space to breathe, a couple of uses of w*p which was... surprising and a pretty unenlightened way of talking about mental health and disability although it's only really objectionable in a couple of instances.
