This was a great read! I was in full on tab and annotation mode as it was my choice for theannotatingbookclub. Amongst the tabs I used was the prompt ‘Miss Marple knitting’ - 5 mentions in the first chapter no less!!
I love the first chapter and introduction to Miss Marple. In the first few short pages we get to know her so well, she is a canny old bird. The way she gets her ‘helper’ Miss Knight out of the way so she can snoop is brilliant. Miss K thinks she is old and frail, the rest of the village know better:
‘Miss Marple has always been as sharp as a needle, and I’d say she still is.’
We soon learn Miss Marple’s MO, the fact the her old world is the same as the new, people do not change and although they may use new phraseology the subjects of conversation never change - and this is how she works things out with reference to what she knows. Miss Marple is a student of human nature, she may not get out much but she sees all that goes on in St Mary Mead and then applies it to a case.
‘Human nature. I mean, is just the same everywhere.’
Agatha Christie does dialogue so well - ‘what I’d prescribe for you is a nice juicy Murder.’ I love the chats with Dolly Bantry and Miss Marple, such great gossip and the Mexican stand off between Miss Marple and Miss Knight which is light hearted and a bit tongue in cheek.
‘I don’t know why you should assume that I think of murder all the time.’
There are plenty of references to previous books, Murder At The Vicarage and The Body In The Library are two. I really enjoyed this aspect of the writing. This book was written in 1962 and there is some outdated language and slurs used, which often in the case in Christie’s books. Some readers may find this difficult.
A couple of reveals at the end seemed to come a little out of nowhere - I hadn’t spotted the clues, although I may have missed them. However once Miss Marple is on the scene she has it all wrapped up pretty quickly!

It is slow to start as the groundwork is laid for the first 80 pages but picks up after there.
Miss Marple and Craddock have a great friendship which is lovely to read about. The devil is in the details that seem at first insubstantial but later prove most important.
It is a fun mystery but I think it would be better to read within the series about Miss Maple rather then a standalone like I did. I believe that if read in the context of the series one could really fall in love with recurring characters, the community and the atmospher this book creates.
