Oh, Kel. You so awesome.

This was a good book. It took me awhile to read... But that is probley because school; stared and that means less time. But overall it was a really good book!

Kel goes to war, ordered by King Jon to the northern border. She's asked to set up and run the refugee camp, Haven, defending 500 people with only 40 men, and burdened with her own private mission to destroy the mage creating the war machines from giants bones and the souls of murdered children. Angry at being sidelined and prevented from taking part in the fighting, she sets about teaching her refugees to fight, and collects a group of orphans along the way. When Haven is attacked while Kal is at Mastiff giving her monthly reports, she finally gets the chance to go after Bryce, even if it means losing everything.

I loved it. I got to see more of Tortall and learn more about the customs of the country. Having never read the 'Protector of the Small' series before, despite being a fan of Tamora Pierce's Tortall books for over twenty years, I can see how her writing has changed, this series contains more detailed world building and characterisation than her early series. This series has fleshed out the map and the people of Tortall. I noticed the same writing changes in 'Tempests and Slaughter'. Her 2nd Numair book, Beka Cooper and Tricketer series are next on my list to read, when I'm able to. If you read the Lioness books as a teenager, I recommend reading the Protector of the Small series if you haven't already.

This will be a review for the entire protector of the small quartet.

So, I make it no secret that Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors to this day, and for good reason since I have reread most of her books at least a half a dozen times if not more. In the past, this quartet was not my favorite, but like most things, it definitely got better with age.

PROSE: 5
Pierce's books are for young adults and budding avid readers but her prose is still well formed, enjoyable to read, and keeps you hooked in. She is one of my go to recommendations for my friends with younger children, both girls and boys. Although it is easy reading I don't find it overly simple or boring to read.

CHARACTERS: 5
I will admit that in the past I did not appreciate Kel. I loved the characters surrounding Kel like Nel, Dom, Owen, etc. I absolutely ADORED meeting Raoul again, seeing Alanna from a distance, and Kel's interactions with Daine and Numair. It was interesting seeing Johnathan being disapproved of and not adored like he has been in the her other Tortall books. But back to Kel. I recently had the honor of meeting Tamora and during her talk prior to the signing, she mentioned that Kel she would enjoy spending a day with Kel because all her other characters would piss her off too much. It inspired me to read the series again and BOY am I glad I did. I didn't know it, but I needed Kel's staunch loyalty, common sense, and sheer determination. She is a fantastic roll model for young readers and adults and if more people were like her the world would be a better place.

PLOT: 5
Tamora did a good job of making the second lady knights tale different from Alanna's, unique, and compelling in it's own right. Kel is given different fears, different challenges, and different foes to overcome. It does not feel like a retelling of Song of the Lioness at all.

I've read this one so many times (pretty sure every summer for years), that I feel like I don't even need to read the last few pages (there's a pun in there somewhere, but I can't find it). But I do anyway because it's a very satisfying ending/beginning.
