Compared to Squire, I found this one to be a slow read. But I would say that Squire is the best in the Protector of the Small quartet.
I think there was almost too much detail in the building of Haven in comparison to the invasion of Scanra, and the lack of Lord Raoul is always sad… but alas, a good book overall.

Sadly, this series has never been my favorite of the books in the Tortall world, but I’m especially not a fan of this book. Overall, the series needed more editing, but particularly for this last book, the pacing often drags, and I think it was a mistake to wait to even introduce “the big bad” for the entire series (and many many other characters) until almost the end of the series, because it means that the final battle with the big bad has a lot less meaning and is pretty anti-climactic compared to the other series finales set in this Tortall world. I think this quote (from this book) sums it up kind of nicely actually:
“He was the worst letdown of her life. She had expected someone with Numair’s or Daine’s air of hidden power, or Baird’s suggestion of iron strength, not this ratlike creature. He truly was a Nothing Man.”
— Lady Knight: Book 4 of the Protector of the Small Quartet by Tamora Pierce
I really think this series could have been much improved if it had been edited down to a trilogy (or even to a duology like the Trickster’s duology about Alanna’s daughter) to make the overall series plot more streamlined, and the series should have ended with Kaladry getting her shield/should have ended with book 3. The ending of book 3 was just a lot more meaningful (and relevant to the other books in the series) than the ending of this book 4.
