Mixed feelings about this last book. It starts with the culmination of the last one - Tortall is heavily embedded in the horrors of war. Daine and Numair haven't rested in months, fighting off one threat or another with their magic. In the middle of a standoff with an enemy, Daine starts to be pulled through a portal by an unknown force - Numair grabs on to her, and from there, the story splinters.
While Tortall fights all out against the former Emperor Ozorne, currently an Immortal with fearsome new powers, Daine and Numair are trapped in the Realm of the Gods, seemingly with no way to get home for months. They embark on a journey through the realm, accompanied by two minor gods, but not really having adventures. It felt like a lot of the action in the story was happening elsewhere, and I wasn't entirely swept along in the story.
While there were certain details about the Immortals that were interesting, I was more interested towards the end, when they finally crossed over to the human realm and got back into the fighting and using their magic. But also, dragons!
The love story at the end felt a little.. wrong, even though we knew it was coming since the last book.

I'm loving this series. I want to be Dane! She gets to communication with animals and gets the hottie ;)
I would recommend this series.
I would recommend this series.
Reread 03/20 - my least favorite of this quartet because of the developing relationship between Daine and Numair. Especially from an adult perspective, although they seem well-suited, the age difference and student-teacher dynamic seems inappropriate. I appreciate that Pierce at least allowed the characters to explore that angle, but still wish Daine was a little bit older before they got involved. The rest of the story, particularly in the realms of the gods, is also less engaging than others in the series.
Always great to come back to these books. While Emperor Mage is my favourite, I still enjoy this conclusion, and the series (like all the Tortall books) will always hold a special place in my heart.
Still a really good book, but damn, I couldn't ignore the 15 year age difference between Numair and Daine. Yeugh.

This was almost 4 stars but Numair had to catch f*cking feelings for 15 YEAR OLD GIRL!!! Like I get it, "medieval fantasy" and what not but, there's a 15 year age gap and she's a minor. No no no. That's just eww.
Trigger Warnings: Adult/minor relationship, war, violence, animal death, gore, blood, injuries, body horror, confinement, medical content, grief, murder, and fire

Always a good read when you can finish it in one day and when you don't pay attention to what page you are on. Still one of my favorite series and I was so happy to come across it again to read. Books in ranking order are: 1,4,2,3 for how I like them reading style wise.
Probably my least favorite of the books in the Immortals quartet. 3 stars for book #4, but for the series as a whole, I'd say 4.5 stars. Well worth reading.
