So this is the second book in the Library of America collection I'm reading, and I believe its the second novel that Le Guin wrote. Similar to the first book, Rocannon's World, already we can see a lot of Le Guin's strengths in this book. The prose is poetic and the world building is interesting and believable, with the focus really being on the feelings and growth of the two main characters.
The story is pretty simple, really just being about how two societies with a deep distrust of one another eventually realizing that both need the other at a time of crisis, and the struggles and difficulties that people from both groups have with this conclusion.
I don't really have a lot to say about the book except that it's solidly paced and a fun read from beginning to end. It doesn't have the same issues I had with Rocannon's World, namely that the ending began to drag, however it doesn't have something as interesting as the exploration of mythic remembrance in that novel.
I think all in all a good 5 out of 10.

Some interesting ideas, but mostly empty. Perhaps to be expected of so short a novel. Regardless I look forward to exploring the rest of the Hainish Cycle

Beautifully written. More focused and less ambitious than some of the other Hain books, which really helped elucidate the themes of otherness, living in exile, etc.

Er gebeurde heel veel en niets ervan boeide me echt.
Het ritme was continu hetzelfde doordat ze alles vrij uitvoerig beschreef, dus het was altijd even wennen als ze van een casual trip door de stad plots overgingen naar koelbloedig vermoord worden door een of ander mythisch wezen of volk. De verhaallijn was ook all over the place. Ik dacht dat het zou gaan over de liefdesrelatie tussen de hoofdpersonages, maar die was zo onderhevig aan het oorlogsverhaal dat er van die emotionele strijd en verlangen enzovoort niets overbleef. Ze zagen elkaar letterlijk niet eens dus ja, moeilijk dan. Spijtig dat Le Guin daarbij niet meer van het mindspeak heeft gebruik gemaakt. Dat had de lezer veel meer persoonlijk in het verhaal kunnen trekken waar het nu altijd afstandelijk bleef. Waarom had ik iets moeten geven om deze personages? Zij is een willekeurige meid uit een dorp waarvan haar vader continu haar bestaan vergeet (omdat hij ontelbaar veel kinderen heeft) en hij een alienleider die eigenlijk niet eens echt de leider is (joepie democratie is hier een exportproduct naar vreemde planeten). Le Guin had meer kunnen spelen met het idee dat het koppel wat betreft ras ook aan elkaar verbonden is (behalve gewoon de ~vibe~) en zo ook hun volkeren. In andere boeken zoals The Telling gaat ze beter om met subtiele hints over cruciale links die diepgang aan het verhaal geven.
Verder hield ik wel van het mysterie rond de twee (of drie?) volkeren en wie nu menselijk was of hoe ze in die situatie terecht waren gekomen. De rest: meh. Ik noteer dat Le Guin geen kei is in vechtscènes. Blij dat het klaar is.

Another barbarian tale with even less of the cosmic backdrop that this series is supposed to be about. It was quite uninteresting.

I liked this one more than Rocannon's world. There are some very sexist characters, but I felt like Le Guin was exploring how racism and sexism are intertwined.
