I don't really know how to describe or review this book. So, I'll just leave some of my favorite quotes that I think capture the story best. Ocean is truly an incredible writer.

"I am thinking of beauty again, how some things are hunted because we have deemed them beautiful. If, relative to the history of our planet, an individual life is so short, a blink, as they say, then to be gorgeous, even from the day you're born to the day you die, is to be gorgeous only briefly."

“They say nothing lasts forever but they're just scared it will last longer than they can love it.”

“You once told me that the human eye is god's loneliest creation. How so much of the world passes through the pupil and still it holds nothing. The eye, alone in its socket, doesn't even know there's another one, just like it, an inch away, just as hungry, as empty.”

“In Vietnamese, the word for missing someone and remembering them is the same: nhớ. Sometimes, when you ask me over the phone, Có nhớ mẹ không? I flinch, thinking you meant, Do you remember me? I miss you more than I remember you.”

I never thought that it was possible to write something THIS lyrical, beatiful and tender, that words could be crafted into this, I am glad that I know better now.

The way this is written is just absolutely beautiful. Very poetic, this might not work for you if you don't enjoy poetry. I happen to absolutely love poetry.

This book is very sad a lot of the time. It handles tough themes and sensitive subjects. I would definitely check the trigger warnings if you happen to have triggers related to abuse or drugs.

There's also this beautiful thread of hope in this book that saves it from being too bleak. But it definitely isn't a feel-good book, so approach it with that in mind.

I did really enjoy this book, but I believe it is more of a writer's book than a reader's book. In every way possible, this is what aspire to write like, but as a result it is not the easiest to read.

I'm in love with the story. There wasn't a moment that I didn't feel sad in some type of way. Whilst it isn't a crying type of sad, it was enough to make me nostalgic for my own heritage and choices.

All in all, I'm confused by my reaction to this book, but I know its something special.
