Not bad but not amazing either. I struggled with the back and forth, indecisive dialogue. The same thoughts repeated so many times it was annoying. I feel like the point could’ve been made without repeating it so much. Also the whole wanna be love triangle was done badly in my opinion. Like she barely even has any real conversations with one character but she loves him. Yet another guy doesn’t even know her really at all but loves her and she likes one guy and loves the other. It just fell flat like it was trying to hard. The plot wasn’t bad but it was predictable. I don’t plan to read the next book. Very repetitive and young adult. I didn’t have high hopes going in. Overall I think this book was over hyped to me.

Good and I liked the twist at the end. It did feel quite emotional. Something about it though I can't quite explain that just felt a bit off - the rhythm maybe. Sometimes things felt too obvious and sometimes things were totally out of the blue and didn't seem to fit. I also definitely had to age up the characters too as they felt too young.

I read this book so fast! I loved the romance and the plot moved at a perfect pace!! I loved the characters and almost cried at the thought of the pain some of the people in the story had to go through! I am very excited for the next book!

Reading other reviews after having read it, I sometimes wonder if understand characters motives or actions a little too much. I really liked this book. Yes it was a “ya checklist” or the standard format, but I liked the way it was done.

Theo was never giving the option to make decisions, so why would she be any good at it? Nothing was ever extremely personal until her first kill, before that she was just a puppet for the Kaiser, a shadow of the SIX year old she was when everything changed. She never got to decide anything in her life. Her mother’s death haunted her, and the people she was punished over, she never even knew. Her being queen was a long forgotten fantasy, until him. The father she never realized. One she would being to risk everything for, and have to confront the persona she had been for 10 years.

I can’t wait to see her continue to grow in the next book, and if Cress was blessed by Astrea’s fire god, or her own. As we know, they are more revenge motivated or dark than Astrea gods.

As for the plot, I really liked it. I wrote a fanfic of similar details a few years ago, so a lot of it made sense to me, and the motive behind actions was understandable. If anyone is complaining about being in Theo’s head, it’s first person. That’s how it works. It keeps certain details away from the reader because the character doesn’t know it herself. Don’t read first person books if you don’t like being a characters thought process. Some aren’t like Theo, but the way she’s stuck in her head makes sense when she’s been out of it for so long. There is a lot she has to sort through and rethink and plan and go over now that she’s made her own decision after not doing so for years.

Just not for me. There's really nothing here I haven't seen before in Ember or Red Queen or any 'deposed/missing princess trying to reclaim her throne' novel. I also found the naming of things super awkward.

If you haven't read many books like that, you might enjoy it. It flows well enough and is a pretty quick read.

DID NOT FINISH: 15%

just didn’t care about it - likely because it was a similar plot to others i’ve read, not because it was bad writing or anything

will perhaps pick it up again in the future
