I adored this book. I usually am not one for political books or political intrigue, but this book was outstanding and kept me interested. The twist at the end was something I didn’t expect either. I am hooked into knowing what will happen, who Theo’s enemies will all turn out to be, who her allies will be and if she can save her kingdom. Well done.
Very typical YA fantasy- but engaging, fast paced, very entertaining. Will finish the trilogy!
This was a great book. You get pulled into the story and just want to keep going to find out where it goes. Looking forward to starting book 2.
this is quite literally the 10th YA fantasy book that I read and don't like, don't feel engaged to and won't continue with the series... AM I GETTING OLD?!
it bothered me that the MC didn’t actually do anything?
her whole plot of seducing the prince only works because for some reason the prince was already hung up on her, never mind that they had apparently never held a conversation prior to the beginning of the book despite having lived 10 years in the same place. And then the prince falls in love with her with two secret rendezvous enough to betray his father and country, okay, super-believable
and the MC spends the whole book stalling what she has to do to really start the revolution and take back the throne, with half-assed excuses about not being the right moment and doing things “her way” because she was afraid and not sure (which I can understand, her reticence to kill or hurt the only people who have been nice to her in such a hostile environment, as well as the psychological effects of what she’s been through) but it bothers me nevertheless, that until these people show their true colors, she doesn’t actually do anything, therefore she is not active, she is just responding to events, and still doesn’t do what has to be done: she delegates the task of killing The Theyn and Cress to a child and doesn’t kill the prince in the end.
also, it bothers me that the MC is only smart when it’s plot convenient. I mean, she is dumb as fuck and suddenly knows about strategy and the best course of action, or she is able to completely read a person and know what they’re thinking and the reasons behind their decisions (and i hate this, when authors don’t want to include more povs, but want us to know exactly what some characters are thinking, so they just make the mc a clairvoyant).

I knew as soon as I saw the cover that I’d love this book— and sure enough, here I am finished with it and reeling. Ash Princess has an overall poignancy that pulled at my heartstrings and made me ache for Theo, and hate Cress from the beginning. It’s opulent, yet dark. There’s magic and there is death, but also intrigue and romance. And somehow it all comes together beautifully in this enchanting story.
I’m so happy to have had the chance to read this wonderful ARC before it comes out next year— but now I’m dealing with the realization that I have to wait until 2019 to find out what happens next!

2.5
“I let my fear cow me, I let them cow me. But I’m done. I’m going to make them pay. For everything they’ve done to us, to our country. To our fathers and our mothers. Will you help me?”
Ash Princess was a book that I've wanted to read for some time now. Sadly it did not deliver on many of its promised components. I would prefer faster pace.

3.5. rounded down for the breath she didn’t realize she was holding
When you read this, I have to warn you, that it is pretty much exactly what you would expect from a ya fantasy. Though, while not being very original, it did live up to its standards.
First off, the whole world was amazing, as well as the whole elemental powers thing, which is something you don't often see. Everything about it was very well explained, so you understood it without trying to.
Another thing was that it wasn't as dark as I expected it to be, even though there are quite a few things that should make it seem that way.
In some places it did feel dragged out, and probably didn't need to be as long as it was. More could have happened in them 400+ pages. Let me just say that some skimming was involved.
Love Triangle. Yes, there was one, as is more than common lately. But it wasn't much of one. It didn't feel real most of the time, and it could have been developed more.
Lastly, there could have been more twists in the book. Or at least made them bigger and more dramatic. A lot it was kind of predictable, except the one at the end.
Overall, a good book, especially so for the first book from this author. Now there's just the wait for Lady Smoke.
