This had great characterization and I found it really well done. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone does in book 2!

“I am Theodosia Eirene Houzzara, Queen of Astrea, and I will endure this.”

Summary:
After a siege laid waste to her country, Theo is taken captive and given the title of Ash Princess. 10 years later, she is still trying to survive when a rebellion and political plot arises.

Review:
This book had me on the edge of my seat. There was a lot that I liked about this book. I found the characters loveable and interesting to read about. I loved the world and how religion was handled. I also loved the lore that has been told and I really want to learn more.

I think my only critique is the repetition of the reader being told about what they already read over and over.

Overall, I loved this book and can’t wait to continue with the series.

“I am angry.

I am hungry.

And I promise myself that one day I will watch them all burn.”
- Theodosia Eirene Houzzara.

Very basic. It wasn't bad, but also not unique to the recent books released in this genre.

I finally had to walk away. It just got too bogged down in details. Eliminate some and get on with the story.

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

Ultimately just found it too boring and like every other fantasy YA from this time period.

It took me a while to be totally engaged by this story. I think there could have been a little bit more action in the first 50-60% of the book. That being said, once the action picked up, I couldn't stop listening. I'm rooting for Theodosia and Soren. Definitely will read the next book.

3.5 - Solid YA fantasy, decently well written, engaging enough. Nothing overly special.

Ugh.

Might lower my rating cause I am maaaad.

Just some reasons I didn't like this book:

-The main character insufferable and kept changing her mind so much that I lost track.
SpoilerShe was so quick to turn on (and try to murder!) people that she claimed to love.

-The other characters were all trash.
-Love triangle (and zero chemistry with any of them).
-Boring.
SpoilerAt one point, the prince mentioned that he killed all of his pet cats because his Dad made him. I felt sick and almost DNF'd at that point. Not sure why that was even included in the book.

Not continuing with the series.
