Whoa! Really exciting fantasy story! Love, betrayal, murder, magical powers, friendship, strong female characters... Already have book two downloaded.

I received this book in a giveaway from Goodreads, so thank you so much for that! Now for a review!

Just wow. I was originally wary of this one, so I'd been avoiding picking it up, but since I got it now I might as well, eh? The reasoning behind it is that it fell into such a popular trope and it was one I read with Red Queen already. I really love Red Queen but I didn't need to be reading it over again here. I WAS WRONG.

This book was indeed quite different. Brutal and crushing and instead of being on the outside banging to get in, I was on the inside with Theo trying to escape. A completely different and painful POV. All that she went through, the different variations of torture and pain, just made my heart drop from my body. By the end, it gave me cause to worry too that she may just turn into her great enemy, something she doesn't want to be.

Incredible imagery. Astora is gorgeous. I get why Theo wants to save it. I understood perfectly. Sebastian gave so much that it makes me want to pick up and help. Breathtaking. From the way Theo describes it to the attire typically worn to the land to the gems that enhance the people's magic. I'm speechless.

The plot twists weren't major but they left a hell of a mark, for sure. I was stunned, especially at the end. I've completely flipped on this series. I look forward to finishing it.

There was a flaw but idc I LOVED IT !

Genre: Fantasy

This story is about a brave girl who endures some of the toughest ridicule by the Kaiser. Through relentless effort and bravery, Theodosia is able to reclaim her throne and free her people.

I could use this book to encourage kids in my class to be brave and stand up for what they believe is right.

This book was not what I was expecting, in a good way. I thought it would be a typical “princess with pure heart is a prisoner of the country that defeated hers”. But in fact, absolutely no one has the moral high ground because of their actions: committing atrocities from persuading children to become ad hoc assassins to using slaves as the fantasy equivalent of cannon fodder. It gets a little tiring seeing people bend into mental knots trying to convince themselves that what they’re doing is justified, but I appreciate the book doesn’t gloss over the terrible things the “good” side has done.

I dunno. Somehow I was slightly frustrated that the writing seemed to kill the suspense at times? But I enjoyed it nonetheless. I am vacillating between 3 and 4 stars.

This book has definitely exceeded my expectation. Although there are so many typical YA tropes, I can't help but enjoy it. The very first 3 chapters got me hooked. I do feel like it's better than the other books I've been reading, and I am definitely excited to continue. I don't really wanna go in depth, but i do love the main Character. This is definitely dark at times. I think the history and the world building was done really well although I wish they could have been a little more fleshed out. Besides, the magic system wasn't really well-explained, but I do get the whole idea of it. This book definitely has a lot of plotting, and it kinda requires the main characters to have like 2 Identity. I'm trying to be vague

Written in first person pov, the author sinks you into a world of tyranny with little hope for the future. I can't wait to find out the end in the sequel.

4.5 stars

I liked this book a lot more than I was even expecting to. Theo/Thora was a unique take on the fantasy lead female role. She harbored a lot of inner anger that she was never able to release. By the end of this book, we see it degrade her slowly. That is a bold move for an author: making the character deteriorate throughout the novel to the point where I don't even actually like her at the end.
That doesn't mean I didn't like the book though - which I received for free in exchange for my honest review through NetGalley. Once I started reading it, I was hooked in by the amazing characters, their development, and the Soren-Theo romance. I am team Soren all the way: from the first moment we saw them meet. I don't care for the "boy I grew up with so I must be with him" characters. (I hated Aspen in The Selection series also.) So I couldn't care less about the romantic aspect of Theo's relationship with what's-his-name.
The ending...this was controversial to me. I didn't like Theo at that point. She had made so many decisions that made me doubt her earlier sincerity that I stopped connecting with her. As I said before, I think this is related to the sheer amount of anger and hate she had pent up and it isn't sudden. It's very gradual. So either, we are witnessing the making of a villain or this girl is heading for a smackdown. Either way, I am all in for book 2!

Slow until the end.
