Deeply sighing at this read.
I picked this up because I thought it would be interesting to read a book with a neurodivergent protagonist. It turned out to be very similar to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime in its overtly harmful nature.

Autism seems to = sociopath to a lot of people/writers and there is never actually any exploration into the character outside of how they are perceived by neurotypicals.
Everything was so superficial and when I realised where the ending was going I was even more disappointed. It was giving “autism can be cured with cognitive behavioural therapy.”

This book was far too wrapped in ableism; he is constantly taught that he needs to conform in order to be accepted instead of being who he truly is and the ending was a horrible way to support this message that it’s not ok to be who you are if who you are does not fit societal norms.

I would personally like to see much broader (own voices!) neurodivergent representation, and this book is not it.

Short chapters were a plus but that was about it for me.

(Includes an ableist slur and moderate/graphic violence)

I see why 남준 and 윤기 liked this book. I see both of them in it. Should have written the review sooner though, my links are starting to blur but again it was still interesting to see, throughout my reading, two of my favorite people “reflected” in this story.

Contrary to what I heard from some people, I thought the author did a good job of telling a story through someone who cannot feel emotions without making it seem lifeless. Not the most memorable book but still one that will stick with me, I think.

such a tender, careful exploration of the human psyche. it wasnt always pretty and it wasnt always comfortable but it was always, always honest. somehow, despite the violence, there was also always an undercurrent of gentleness throughout. yunjae talks of his difficulty with emotions, of how different he is from his peers, yet his love for the people close to him is embedded all throughout his thoughts and actions. it really makes you feel at the end of the day humans are made to love in whichever form that may be. this book is about introspection, its about complicated family relationships, its about being different, its about grief. its about finding your place in the world, its about the desperation to be seen, its about being children. above all, almond is about love. i finished this book with an ache in my heart that was so so worth it. loved it <3

It was fast paced, emotional, shocking at moments.
I had no idea the book was going to take such a sharp turn with the grandmother dying and the mother falling in a coma. (The foreshadowing was there but the violence involved in all of it was shocking.

Loved the ending-- it was maybe too perfect but it is a YA book.  The friendship between the two main characters was fun to read about.
