i quite liked this. the first two-thirds or so took me much longer to read because it was difficult to be in yunjae'e head for too long but i binged the back half very quickly. i liked the exploration of alexithymia but his narration was too much at times.
while i'm happy with the way things ended, i thought it was a tad cheesy that his mom woke up. good for him though.
i found myself really feeling for gon.
i'm happy he has sensible adults around him now at least.

Almond is unique in its ability to maintain the audience's interest in the story of an "emotionless" boy while describing a series of tragedies in a nearly bleak way. I was compelled to read this book after someone described the book as a tale about two monsters navigating an unusual relationship. I became interested because what truly makes a monster? What circumstances must a young boy go through to be known as one? I was quickly surprised to learn that "monster" meant social outcast and someone misunderstood by the majority for being different. It may sound obvious and almost cliche as an outsider, but as the reader reflects on Yun-Jae's life and learns of his dispossession, you realize you're like everyone else making assumptions and have to remove all preconceptions about who he is. The anticipation and expectation that Yun-Jae will do something to deserve this reputation never comes, and you're left confused about how this could be. Almond is not a novel about two people joining together to do terrible deeds, but rather two people who are largely misunderstood and are not given enough grace to prove to people otherwise. I was really interested in Gon as a character considering he seems like the typical archetype people would try to protect. I was proven wrong at every turn and could not understand why
no one simply asked him about his past and tried to help him heal accordingly. He was failed by so many, including his father, and the other difference that could be made was post-traumatic event.
I view Almond as a testament to healing (in a roundabout way) and self-discovery. You can learn from others just as they learn from you. Gon and Yun-jae's relationship may not be simple but the messaging is clear: don't write people off before you seek to understand them. Anyway, I was bit uncertain about the ending but overall I really enjoyed this read!

This is what I call a wonderful read.

The book follows the story of Yun-jae, a boy who was born with a problem: he cannot express any feeling - no happiness, no sadness, no fear. Because of that it's very hard to fit in the society. The whole story is written from his point of view - the pov of aomwone who tries to understand what others feel and tey to read social ques and mimics in order to knoe how to respond to things.

Another important character in the book is Gon. Their relationship is so special, for both of them, it's even harder to understand it in the beginning but it does make sense.

This book is about feelings, friendship, lovw and family. The book shoes how conplex feelings are and how hard actually is to understand them, to misinterpreted a smile, or tears or words such as "go away".

This book made me cry as a baby in the end. It is a beautiful story with beautiful writing and amazing growth.
