This is a book that had the promise of a great novel but landed as above average. It feels like half a novel. A story of generational trauma and place.
I inhaled this book and read it as a companion novel with Jason Reynold's Stamped. This nation was built on the backs of forced labor. (It was also interesting to see how similar their narration was of the treatment of Native Americans.) I got the honor of being in charge of running Orange's book signing at the NCTE Conference 2019. Orange was kind and patient with every single person that he met and was gracious in meeting everyone. I was nervous about being close to a Pulitzer Prize Finalist (and had no idea that I was going to be in charge of an author's book signing when I showed up to volunteer that day). This is such an essential read for every person who wants to know American history. I truly admire and agree with his stance that calling Native Americans resilient is an insult "And don't make the mistake of calling us resilient...Would you call an attempted murder victim resilient?" The book also made me question who I am as a human, if I do not analyze how I came to have privilege, while others did not."If you were fortunate enough to be born into a family whose ancestors directly benefited from genocide and/or slavery, maybe you think the more you don't know, the more innocent you can stay, which is a good incentive to not find out, not look too deep, to walk carefully around the sleeping tiger."However, it was the storytelling and the characters that truly drew you into the novel. So thank you, Mr. Orange, for writing an amazing novel...and for also not getting irritated at the young woman who was screaming at/organizing the 200 people waiting for their novels to be signed.

amazing. i havent read a writing style this yet and it was really interesting. also the amount of history this also talks about is crazy, cause you do not learn all of the shit that happened with the natives when us colonizers first came over crazy 😭😭
i don't know how i feel about the ending tho idk, but still an insanely important read ‼️

Wow. I really liked getting to know all the characters. Though I yelled at the book at the end, what happens to them?!
