OK, look, this is a story about Declan Lynch, to a much lesser degree about Hennessy and Carmen Farooq-Lane, and any other characters have only teaspoons of character development. In that context, with no further expectations, the book is great. The writing is unbeatable. At times it does feel gimmicky or too artsy, but Stiefvater makes it work like magic (and the audiobook narration takes it to the next level).
But oh my fucking god, Ronan is literally asleep for 80% of the story, his “make-up” with Adam is a bunch of dreamy bullshit without actual conversations about their actual real-life problems that they need to discuss like adults, and Matthew’s entire existence is just a footnote. So all of that was disappointing, especially the continually under-developed Pynch. I liked Ronan and Hennessy’s chance to be superheroes in the end but throughout this trilogy Ronan is such a passive character.
Anyway, I’ll disagree with some other readers who felt Ronan’s eleventh hour revelation was adding too much new info to the canon…I don’t think it quite rewrote the rules of the story, but I think it was a bit exhausting to throw in something that weird right at the end of a seven book series. I mean, it was weird even in the context of all the other weird shit in these books.
Still do not understand why the new Fenian is called that. Did Niall call himself a Fenian at one point and I missed it?

I blasted through this book - Stiefvater's writing is so unlike the other authors I read and love, in the best ways.
It was a privilege to grow up alongside these characters - and to get another whirlwind close was quite the thing.
This fantasy universe, so close to our own, will always have a special place in my heart. Can't wait to read everything else Stiefvater has up her sleeve
"The world felt enormous, both past and future, with their slender present hovering in the middle."

What a wonderful wonderful ending to a wonderful wonderful story.
Thank you Maggie
Thank you Maggie
I'm not mad at the plot, I'm simply not into it. The plot of the dreamer trilogy is a lot larger than the plot of TRC (involving much more people) so the grand stage of it all was not as interesting to me. It doesn't have the whimsicality that TRC had. I don't want to compare it to TRC because they're not the same, but a lot of what I loved in TRC was missing and I went into the trilogy wanting it. It's still got that darker theme (maybe even more so?) that TRC had though.
But I loved how we got more about the Lynch brothers (and family) and Adam. All the new characters that were introduced into the trilogy just weren't my speed. They didn't feel integrated into the plot in a way I enjoyed. Stiefvater is still a wonderful author; their ability to characterize and describe character relations makes me envious. I wish.
This trilogy hit a lot of good but it also hit a lot of not so good for me. I can't say I'd recommend this as a stand-alone series, maybe so-- it might be more enjoyable if you haven't read TRC. But I don't enjoy the plot here because I've read TRC. I enjoy the Lynch brothers, that's kind of it. If you've read TRC I think it's worth slogging through for the bits about the Lynch brothers, because we learn a good bit about them that you'd like to know if you like them. I found it very hard to care about Hennessy/Jordan and all the visionaries, and Bryde, and basically everyone else. They just weren't interesting to me.
