In some ways the book was really refreshing. There is so much representation in this book, as both main characters are openly bi-sexual and there are same-sex relationships all throughout. The romance between the main characters starts out really great, with actual communication and (mostly) honesty. It grows naturally from physical attraction and really has almost no angst whatsoever. The problem comes when in spirals down into the very typical I-must-break-their-heart-to-protect-them trope. I had such high hopes...
The magic system is interesting, but I find the class system they have (non-Resonants, Conduits, Aetherborne, Elders, etc.) to be a little confusing, but this may be done purposely for a reveal of who's who later.
The pacing is really slow, as this book is mostly character driven without a whole lot happening plot-wise. This seems to be setup for the rest of the series, so it's forgivable for now. However, be prepared for pretty much nothing but dialogue for the first 60% of the book.
The next book is supposed to come out later this year, and I'll keep it on my TBR for now as I'm interested to see where this going to go and if it will get plottier as it goes along.

Weeks later, and I still can’t stop thinking about this book—what an incredible debut novel! The world-building is immersive, the characters are unforgettable, and the writing pulls you straight into every scene. With a perfect mix of magic, politics, tension, and humor (oh, the banter!), this story had me hooked from start to finish. Kieran has quickly earned a spot as one of my all-time favorite male main characters. I laughed out loud so many times while reading, and the intelligent debates and conversations made it even more enjoyable. Here is a novel with romance and plot! I’m both nervous and excited to see where the author takes us next, and I’m crossing my fingers for an HEA without too much heartbreak along the way. This is easily one of my top reads for 2024, and I’ll be recommending it to everyone!

The world was beautifully created. I missed reading more about its rules and developing further into all the fantasy details. I can't wait to read the second one.
This was a little slow-paced, and I'm assuming, given that it will be 5 books and a novella, that this book aimed to present the main two characters, Arken and Kieran, and their relationship.
I hope the second book delves deeper into the prophecy and its implications for Arken and Kieran's relationship.

Nothing stuck out to me or was unique, and it feels the exact same as every other BookTok Dark Romantasy. Blehhh
