I have read two other books by this author that I found super suspenseful and page turning. This one had suspense, but it was also terribly graphic, reduntantly so. The graphic descriptions of the torture/abuse that frequent this book just made it impossible for me to say I enjoyed it.

It made me uncomfortable, which I am sure is the point, but I think there was a way to balance this better so that the reader would not feel gross for even reading it. It wasn't fun to read, which is what I look for in a thriller.

The rest of the book was either slow (some parts were boring, just dragged), predictable, or unplausable.

I won't say the writing is awful, so that saves this from being a 1 star. The frequency and description of the violence is gratuitous. The plot and ending is a bit far-fetched as well, but that has nothing on the yuck that is this book. I wish it'd never been recommended to me.

this was one of the best thrillers i’ve read recently, and simultaneously, one of the hardest. i don’t think i’ve ever a book as brutal, and straight-up wild as this. there were so many moments i just closed it because it got super, super uncomfortable. but one sentiment that remained throughout the entire thing is sadness.

this is an incredibly sad and painful story, and reading sam caroll’s last entry was so tearful. although i expected an emotionally chaotic and complex ending, the fact that it wrapped up the way it did was satisfying to me, because i don’t think i could’ve handled anything more.

this was really good, and i like being clueless and constantly on the lookout because you don’t know who to trust. i’d only recommend this to people who can stomach extremely brutal, and heart-wrenching gory scenes, written in the most descriptive details.

“Claire read each name and age aloud, because they were human beings and because they mattered.”

Wow. It’s hard to even comprehend everything that I just read. What a ride!!

I would have died of alcohol poisoning 3 times over if I had taken a shot every time Claire fretted about not knowing what to do for 5 paragraphs, but I did love Lydia and I cried a little at the end. 3.5 stars for good plot but kind of weird pacing and some stagnant sections *cough Claire cough*

D A R K, very unsettling, and down right terrifying. However, this being my first Karin Slaughter novel, I enjoyed it, a lot!
