Totally forgot to mark this! Doing a review on my channel soon!

My book club read this in 2016 and I’m just getting around to it now! My first impression was that this is 100% absolutely an adult book. My bookclub only read YA, so we made a whoopsie there. The main character and her friends are teenagers, but there is very graphic sex and murder scenes and a shit ton of blood and gore. So yeah, adult themes aplenty.

I was hesitant in picking this up as I have not yet liked anything I’ve read by Jay Kristoff (LIFEL1K3 and Illuminae) but literally every reader in the world says they love this series, well that’s how it feels anyway. There is a shit tonne of hype about the third book being released soon, so I thought it would be a good time to catchup.

My relationship with this book is very much hate to love. I absolutely loathe the first 30%. I’d heard it was hard to get into, but my god, I soo badly wanted to mark as DNF. I hated the writing style so much. I hate when books are aware of the reader and talk to us, just leave me out of it! I hate when the writing is for writing sakes and is trying to be clever. Stop it!! Stop comparing everything to everything and just say what’s happening! Argh so annoying. I hate being dumped into a world with a million fantasy phrases and being totally and utterly confused on WTF the happening. And what the hell is with those footnotes?!

But then she got to the assassin school AND. SHIT. GOT. GOOD.

It’s almost as if Jay Kristoff stopped trying and got swept away into the story because his writing style changed. It became so much more easier to understand. I don’t think it was just me adjusting to his style, I feel like he became more about the plot and less about trying to write a book to win some prestigious award.

I loved the average girl teenager with a special skill doing a training montage and kicking arse trope because it was refreshing to see it in an adult setting. There were really intense scenes that the same trope in a YA setting just can’t touch. I loved Mia and Tric and Mister Kindley. Loved the library and the trials and all the studying. I loved the tension and the drama and the arc of the story as well as the overall series arc and so excited to see where it’ll go.

So the last 70%, absolutely a five star read for me. But that beginning, unforgivable! Overall 4 stars and I’ve got my fingers and toes crossed that the second and third books are great reads right from the first page.

This didn't even get interesting until halfway through and even then it took a lot of effort to pick it up again. it just wasnt for me and the footnotes distracted me so much. there were less and less footnotes as the story went on and that was when I started to be more invested in the characters. also there were a couple of things I was questioning as I read it that just contradicted previous scenes.

It’s not a terrible read but it takes effort. Insane amount of descriptions that just makes the storyline convoluted, once you get into it anyway. Very slow to start and then the end is rushed through.

If you aren’t a fan of characters unnecessarily dying to further a storyline, don’t touch this book. Several character deaths were unnecessary. I understand that the story is about assassins but even then, somehow professionals 1) are unable to confirm who is murdering students, 2) they decided MC did it regardless of absent of upset, and then 3) they literally get caught lacking and get drugged

W O W!!!! Great story...can't wait for the next book.
