I received the special owlcrate version of this book in my monthly owlcrate box and was so intrigued by the premise that I couldn’t wait to read it. I made myself join the owlcrate read along and pace myself because I knew if I didn’t I would have devoured this book in one sitting. It was a spooky, intriguing, full of mystery book and I absolutely adored it. It was perfect addition to my October reading list and I’m so glad I got this book!

After a tragic diving accident where she died for eight minutes, Addie is brought along on her mother’s honeymoon with her new husband, David. Though not thrilled to be tagging along on this romantic excursion, Addie wants her mother to be happy and enjoy the vacation she’d been looking forward to for so long. The private island they’d rented is unlike any other island, and the longer Addie lingers, the more she notices its strangeness. But the vacation becomes more bearable after she meets Sean, the eldest son of the caretakers, and he begins showing her all the secret places on the island under the moonlight. But not all of the island’s secrets are beautiful, and there are more people on the island--and not all of them are living.

I really enjoyed this book! I liked the atmosphere of this living island, and the picking out of its history. Eulalie was really intriguing to me, and I wish we could have learned more about her, but I really liked the epilogue and her fate being resolved. Jonah’s identity was a little obvious, but I really enjoyed that plot twist anyway. Billy was an adorable sweetheart, and I loved the fact that he and Addie didn’t end up together, and that he, instead, moved on, and they remained friends despite his crush and unreturned feelings. He got so many gold stars for that! Addie dealing with her trauma from the emotional abuse of her parents’ divorce and how it played into her passion for free-diving. There were a lot of details that really built up the whole book that worked really well together. I really liked the villain, I liked the ghosts, and though it wasn’t the spookiest book, I did feel there was good tension and good mystery, and I can definitely recommend this book!

3.5 stars. Liked the story and the characters, wasn’t massively in love with the ending and epilogue though

This was surprisingly great, the imagery was both gorgeous and grotesque at times. There was a bit where I was like, 'if I have to hear about how much you miss diving one more time...' but other than that, I don't feel like this dragged anywhere else. The island with its mimicking birds and mercurial ghosts and underwater caves was just dang cool and fantastically unsettling! I also loved that the important relationship being formed was a friendship (and a male/female one!) and not a romantic relationship!

The Depths follows Addie - one of the world's best freedivers, meaning she can sink to the depth equivalent of a 19-story building without an oxygen tank. Following an accident where Addie drowned and was considered clinically dead for 8 and a half minutes, she is forced to take a break from freediving. She gets whisked away to a tropical island vacation with her mother and stepfather where some crazy ish is going down. Things start to get strange - like her blood on the ground causes flowers to sprout strangely. You will find yourself turning page after page as you dive deep into the depths to solve the mystery that's happening. Lesperance brings us an eerie, mysterious, and magical tale in The Depths.

I have logistical questions but I don't even care. Once I got into this there was no putting it down. Is this person who they say they are or are they three other possibilities? Is it magic? Horror? I was SEATED for this.
