I listened this without knowing the details of the crime depicted, and mainly because it kept being shown to me as a recommendation. I didn’t want to be jaded by the rumors about her podcast so I tried my best to give this a chance. However for someone who has had issues with plagiarism, I would think you would try to create a book that wasn’t based on a crime which is so well known. We all know about the Jon Benet Ramsey case. So because of that, unfortunately the book did read like fanfic which I really didn’t like. Second, it seemed like a lot of tropes for one book. Somehow I knew that Luke would have a completely different name. Luke being Dave, it’s been done. And I really didn’t like how Margo becomes a hero for her work on the case so that she can insist on working remote with a huge raise when a couple weeks before that she couldn’t even find time to make a spare key. I don’t like, the whole book was irritating to me somehow.

I didn’t want to put it down. Very well written, to the point that I found myself in tears several times. Ashley makes it feel as though you’re watching this unfold with her.

It’s an ok book. Definitely a first book. You can tell Ashley put all her true crime passion into it. Starts a bit slow but it picks up a nice pace throughout. Very easy to read and enjoy. Some interesting plot twists that I wish she had developed further instead of introducing new characters that didn’t add much. The ending was a bit rushed. I wish she would’ve explored the Dave-Billy relationship further, and really dig into that dynamic more, instead of adding a new character just to throw us off.
