This book was so incredible!!! I enjoyed every bit of it. The characters are developed so well! You find out so much about them even up until the last chapter! If you are looking for a really good read with a bit of history, girl power, world building, thriller vibes and even some humor, this book is the book for you. This book goes down as a favorite!

Jane McKeene fights the dead. Post-Civil War, the dead have begun to walk again and in a desperate attempt to quell them indigenous and black youth are forcibly enlisted for elite combat schools. The only upside is those that who do well can become the attendants of a well-to-do white person who she not only be the most gracious servant but willing bodyguard.

However, Jane no matter the fact that she is at the top of her class has no interest in becoming an attendant and hopes to return home to her family she was forcibly taken away from. When families begin to disappear around her and her curiosity gets the better of her she finds herself in the middle of a conspiracy that harkens back to the same sentiments that started the Civil War in the first place.

This book is clever. The framing of the continuation of racism and slavery is the fact that black children are expected to fight the dead, the conspiracies that they are immune, and the belief that it is their duty but also that it is a waste to train them. Jane McKeene is headstrong and has a curious streak that gets her in trouble but she is also smart because she can leverage the fact she is a fighter and is strong and capable against the same racists who need her to protect them when something goes wrong.

There's also a letter component within the story between Jane and her mother that is done very well and shows the bond they have.

4/5. Historical fiction with zombies tackling racism from an MC that kicks ass.

I've had the ebook for 3 years now, and I just finally got around to reading it. And I'm wondering why on earth I waited so long. I borrowed the audiobook as a way to help me clear out backlist books since I can listen to books while at work.

I really enjoyed reading this book (the narration was fantastic) and having the ebook at hand also helped in that I could reference it for spelling and I could double check to make sure that I understood what was going on.

The characters were interesting, if not completely loveable. This is a what if story, that makes me shudder and realize that people can and are horrid. I also would have not survived the zombie apocalypse.

Wonderful writing, compelling storyline, interesting characters, set in post Civil War during a zombie apocalypse, following the exploits of Jane McKeene from the Rose Hill plantation, through the Negro combat school she attended outside of Baltimore, to the wild plains of Kansas, fighting shamblers (zombies), racism, classism, and religious fervor.

Highly recommend!
