I've had the ebook for 3 years now, and I just finally got around to reading it. And I'm wondering why on earth I waited so long. I borrowed the audiobook as a way to help me clear out backlist books since I can listen to books while at work.
I really enjoyed reading this book (the narration was fantastic) and having the ebook at hand also helped in that I could reference it for spelling and I could double check to make sure that I understood what was going on.
The characters were interesting, if not completely loveable. This is a what if story, that makes me shudder and realize that people can and are horrid. I also would have not survived the zombie apocalypse.
Wonderful writing, compelling storyline, interesting characters, set in post Civil War during a zombie apocalypse, following the exploits of Jane McKeene from the Rose Hill plantation, through the Negro combat school she attended outside of Baltimore, to the wild plains of Kansas, fighting shamblers (zombies), racism, classism, and religious fervor.
Highly recommend!

I don't have much to add that other reviewers haven't covered. I loved the book -- it's a great combination of action, history, and social commentary that combines into a page-turning novel. I really hope the future books in the series can build upon what the author has set up here in book one!

I really enjoyed this alternate history zombie story. It was especially interesting to read it back to back with a historical novel from the same time period and perspective - the time just after the civil war. So often zombie stories are set in the present or future - it is interesting to think of the response in history. Also so timely to be reading of white supremacy, racism and a global "pandemic". I really like the main character.
Ireland created a harsh and unforgiving world that swallowed me up as soon as I entered it. I don't know how she managed to write a novel where racism and bigotry were just as scary as the walking dead, but I'm grateful that she did. Considering that there is a #1 next to the title of this book, I should be safe to assume that there will be more novels in this series. I'm ready right now, thanks!

I reread this book in preparation for the sequel and lemme just say: The girls of YA know how to write a damn action sequence, ya feel me?
