A solid idea and very readable style, sprinkling of cool things throughout but its just a little too simplified, a little too sketched out to really land. The horrors of the Civil War, slavery and a zombie apocalypse are a little weirdly juxtaposed with the rather light-hearted tone and straightforward YA problem solving.

An interesting twist and extension of the horrifying historically accurate re-education schools whites sent Native Americans to. Plus zombies. I’m actually excited for the next one.

Really enjoyed it becuase, while there was zombies, they weren't the main thing driving the plot. They were there more as tension and motivation, but there was so much else going on.

This was an entertaining read that did a good job of portraying what a zombie apocalypse would be like during the Civil War. The characters fell a little flat for me, but I found myself rooting for their survival towards the end of the book.

The author creates an extraordinary world in this genre-mixing alternate history set after the Civil War. See my full review here.
