I'm not generally a zombie fan, but this was pretty good.

Here’s a thing about me: I am so glad to be able to review this book, because that means I finally finished it. And I am confidently giving this a rating of 2.5 stars.

Conceptually, this novel was pretty promising. The writing, however, was so completely contrived, either too amateurish or too lazy to make a great story. I’m inclined to go with amateurish seeing as how the language was all over the place. The plot, too, was all over the place. The characterization was all over the place. The timing, especially for the reveals, was absolutely awful. The book was written so poorly that it was hard to get through, but I made myself do it regardless, because I’d gotten more than halfway through and I wanted to be able to fully justify my dislike of the writing style. Overall, I’m just really disappointed by this book, which sucks.

This will make a really good Netflix series, but until then, this is all I really have to say.

It’s hard to describe my feelings of this book. I really enjoyed all of it, but at the same time I’m still very confused by it. I may read again sometime to see if I am able to learn something new from it and see if I missed anything. But I definitely enjoyed it for sure!

OK, I actually read a zombie book and actually couldn't put it down. This is alternate history, with the "stumblers" appearing shortly after the battle of Gettysburg. The heroine of this story is a Negro girl named Jane McKeene who is brave beyond measure if occasionally foolishly rash. She grew up on a plantation in Kentucky but is forced to leave to attend Miss Preston's School of Combat in Baltimore, where Negro girls are trained to kill the stumblers and might aspire to be Attendants to the elite wealthy white women. There are many twists and turns, sending Jane to the west where her death seems certain... but no! There is certain to be at least one sequel, if not a whole series.

Definitely recommend on audio! So good.

Overall I ended up rating this book 3 stars. It started off really well - interesting world building and I liked the main character, but then it veered in a really weird way when it got to the Summerland section. I felt like I was reading two different plots. I wasn't sure if the author knew where she wanted this story to go and just started to throw stuff into the story line. I don't think I will be reading the second book.
