It starts with a bang, continues to explode for the next 299 pages, and then… kind of fizzled out right at the end. I guess I need to read the sequel to get the real conclusion. Wonderful characters, super cool premise, and really thoughtful in between the bursts of action. I just wish the ending felt a little more satisfying… but still, best book I’ve read in awhile.

DID NOT FINISH: 39%

I thought the premise to this book sounded really interesting but the execution really isn't doing it for me. It started off too slow and nothing about the story or world building (which I found honestly pretty weak) is holding my attention.

I also, admittedly, hate Jane. I find her nothing more than a charisma blackhole. She's an asshole and not a cool asshole. Her initial hatred of a girl because she's pretty was the first moment I realized I couldn't stand her. She always seems like she's the smartest person in the room but it's just making me dislike her that much more. There's a line where I can take a character being like that but them being the main character just doesn't work for me when it's to this extent.

This is where I'm going to call it quits.

I actually really enjoyed this book, despite it giving me nightmares about zombies. I liked for characters, and I'm interested to see where it goes. However, it should be noted that there's a ton of period typical racism and racist terminology, so approach with a little caution.

Loved everything about this book but the ending; it's too open and I need more. That is the ONLY reason I'm giving it 4 stars. However, it does leave the door wide open for more in this series.

This book is awesome. Teenage black girls killing zombies in the Reconstruction era! What else do you want from a story??

PS the audiobook is narrated by Bahni Turpin, one of the best.

This book was good. It was weirdly paced i think. Very slow in the beginning. Jane is a queen and I love her. Mr. Gideon is a king and i love him
