I absolutely loved this book! I had to immediately buy the 2nd one. I believe that I finished this book in 3 days. I could not put it down.

Like... 1.5 stars. I didn't finish it. I got about a third of the way through, struggling through each chapter, realized it was part of a series and just gave up. At a third of the way in with only a hint of an actual villain and plot, I realized I couldn't go on.
What frustrates me is that the premise has so much promise, and the book feels like it was written with love and genuine passion. And then two separate editors got hold of it and their visions for its completion fought and it somehow hodge-podged down into this. It was like there was a historical fiction editor who kept the details on point and the dialogue precise and consistent (and I loved the dialogue!). And then the YA editor followed up, whacking away details and context, and radically shortening every chapter. So the historical editor came back in and nurtured Ireland's epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter. And then the YA editor retaliated by making Jane get adversarial with literally everybody, in total contrast to how Ireland and the Historical Editor started things.
Too frustrating. Ah well.

I think Jane is a bad ass woman. The plot is interesting and I enjoyed the characters. Hella white passing black folk lmaoooo which is fine but I found it funny. I’m excited to read the sequel and see her fuck up some more racists.
Oooo. I liked this one. I wasn't sure how I was feeling about it at first but damn, the ending has me needing book two.
I give props for the author reclaiming a piece of American history and writing a kick ass female who uses scythes and or weapons to take down walkers/undead. Her spirit and her strength is amazing.
I rate the book down a star because I feel at times the book got a little stagnant with the plot, but not to the point I got bored. Just nothing was happening. I also rated it down because Katherine went to the school with Jane and she was one of the strongest/best in the class with weapons, but Katherine didn't really do anything throughout the whole book. So it made me wonder wtf she is good at? I guess because she is a passing white she can use that to her advantage, but I really want to see her take down the undead too.
The book ended on a good build up for book two. So when that comes out I'm gonna grab it.
