Slightly clunky as a result, I imagine, of having been adapted from the play. I thought I’d guessed it, then I doubted myself, then I guessed it again. I think I had it by the end but I could have been kidding myself!

I don't read a lot of mystery novels (with some exceptions - see my recent Dorothy L Sayers binge), but was loaned this one by a friend of mine on account of it being an upcoming play at the community theatre group which I am planning to audition for. The story is a classic murder mystery and is a fine specimen of its type. A man enters a house to find a woman holding a gun over the body of her dead husband, and for the next 200 pages we are tracing the story. Who is he? Who might have wanted to kill him? Who did kill him? The plot twists and turns, suspicion leaps from one character to another, and the reader is kept guessing right to the end.
The book is an adaptation of the play (originally written by Agatha Christie) and reads as such. Reading the book it is hard not imagine how it appears on stage. All the action (with a few trifling exceptions) takes place in a single room and the story is very dialogue heavy with people's movements described in detail. There is even a diagram of the stage in the front of the book.
Overall, a decent enough read. Not taxing, not great literature, but entertaining.
