This was a little different than I expected. It’s a lovely coming of age story with a backdrop of 1920s fashion. It was a little slow in parts which is why I want to call this. A 3.5 star book , but the descriptions are quite beautiful and thorough. I had no problem visualizing the parties and the dresses and the food and I really got to know the characters. I almost quit and I’m glad I didn’t.

I received an arc at NYA Lit Fest
I was really excited for this book. The book has been linked to The Great Gatsby which is one of my favourite books. I was slightly disappointed by this book as I was expecting more. I was expecting more parties and I was also expecting more from the plot. I thought that this was a mystery story so I kept waiting for something dramatic to happen but it never did. This book is more of a romance story which I didn't realise going into it.
The pacing is quite slow and for the majority of the book, not a lot happens. What I did like about this book is the author's writing. I loved the descriptions of the parties although I would have liked to have seen more. I would read more from this author in the future. Overall for me, this was just an ok read. I think if I had known more about the book before reading it I might have felt differently as I wouldn't have had expectations of a mystery story.

I had a few issues with this book content-wise, and in places, I felt that the content and writing style didn't align as smoothly as I would have liked, but overall, this was an enjoyable, summery read. Very atmospheric - lovely descriptions throughout - and I thought that the masked ball was a really fun, Shakespeare's-comedy-eque touch. I'd expect no less from the writer of one of my favourite Much Ado About Nothing retellings!
This was an all around great novel, simple easy read. I actually didn't know it was a YA novel until I was looking up Laura Wood after. It wasn't predictable and passes the Bechdel Test. The time period and lavish life styles are very Gatsby. High recommend!
