I have wanted to read this book forever and I am SO grateful I finally got it (as an audiobook - great narration!) WHEW, what a story. Many reviews likened "A Sky Painted Gold" to "The Great Gatsby," and in so many ways I see the similarities. The parties in SPG are just as lavish as Gatsby's, but brighter; readers are brought right into the crowd. There's lots of pining after inaccessible lovers as well. But of course, SPG brought a more modern twist to a classic set up. For starters, the ending is much happier, but be prepared to truly wait for it. I had to finish listening to the book in my car so I could yell at it as much as I needed to. Topics like racism, homophobia, and mental health are touched on, though perhaps in less depth than might be desired, with a somewhat idealized outcome. I did find the representation of class inequality and wealth to be nuanced and explored in an accessible way. Lou is a loveable character, and her family and friends brought this story to light with love.
4 STARS. Not much substance but a very enjoyable read. Kind of a popcorn-type romance which I liked even though I’m not a huge fan of the genre. Beautiful setting. Probably the best you can get out of this type of read.
***4.5 STARS***
I mean, this is just the most charming, glitz-filled, cheering-for-love story I’ve recently read. So cute, so glamorous, so enjoyable.

This book reminds me of: Summer Sisters, the last great american dynasty, & The Life and Death Brigade. Therefore, it is the perfect book. I love Lou! I love that she is a writer, & I love the glamorous summer she has herself at the Cardew House. Lou’s relationship with her sister Alice is so real — the tension that comes with change & wanting different things for each other is so raw & honest. I felt Caitlin’s pain, & I was rooting for her the whole time, & I obviously loved Robert. What a fabulous cast of characters, from Lou’s family to the Cardews’ friends. Most of all, I love that this is more than a love story. This is a story about a girl chasing her passions & goals, & if love fits into the mix, then that’s just an added bonus.
Did absolutely everything I wanted it to. Like a Victoria sponge or a really soft mattress. Lovely stuff
I CAN'T BELIEVE MY GAYDAR WAS WRONG (even if i was right about laurie and elodie)
