So I'm giving this 4 stars mainly because it kept my attention, however, this was not my favorite Nicholas Sparks book!
First of all, change The Notebook to a 20 year separation and you basically have The Best of Me. There were just too many similarities to me. Yes there were a few added obstacles in the storyline but that would happen after 20 years.
Secondly, the book was a little too predictable for me. I mean, come on! You're surprised that the ghost in the windbreaker is the jogger he hit with his car? Like that wasn't obvious.
Lastly, why why why would you tell the bar fight scene from the perspective of the semi-unconscious guy on the ground? Talk about anti-climactic! Why couldn't we get a better view of Dawson's last act of heroism? To me, it made his death way less dramatic.
Honestly I don't even know why I'm giving this 4 stars. I just think Nicholas Sparks has a way of keep his readers engaged even when they aren't impressed. I will continue to read each of Nicholas Sparks books no matter what.

My first Nicholas Sparks book. Are they all this cheesy?
The most surprising parts were the graphic scenes. I’m also frustrated by the Stingray storyline, because we didn’t even find out whose it was in the end, even though multiple times there were statements to the effect of “the owner won’t be happy”.

I thought the story was not only boring but disappointing and depressing as well. I saw what was coming and just kept getting more angry. What a way to write it. Poor guy from the wrong side of the tracks not only lives his miserable life alone but dies after finally getting what he wants. Yeah, I get it. He saved lives blah blah. She's no better. Tied down in a marriage she hated, then cheated and wants more, screwed out of it again. Losing my faith in you, Nicolas.

SPOILER ALERT
Someone dies. Ooh wait, it's Nicholas Sparks. Ok, that's not the part that bothers me most. The Epilogue...really? Come on!!! How unrealistic can we get here Mr. Sparks? Waste of time.
