Great book. I’m glad Disney seems to be better to their underage employees than Nickelodeon. I liked the breakdown of the chapters, each chapter was a major Disney show or movie.
I did wonder if Lalaine (the audiobook narrator) was weirded out reading about her time at Disney and the drama around her departure.

Who knows how true this is but it was a fascinating listen. A little inside baseball in the beginning and then it just becomes about the machine chewing people up. Honestly I’m glad it was more tame than I thought it was going to be. I did tear up at the information that early in the history of Disney channel, executives saw a study that girls lose confidence when they begin puberty so they decided to make empowering female led movies. That’s how children’s TV should get made, with its young viewers and their developmental needs in mind. If only they could have the same focus on their young stars. I think some things are getting better, but the system needs a lot of work.
Stars: 4/5
This book was interesting on the fact that it shed light on the behind the scenes of your favorite TV shows and movies growing up. It compiled a bunch of interviews and never heard before interviews as well. This book is dark but not as dark as the dark side of Nickelodeon show.

Overall a very softball book, even as it addresses some of the awful conditions these kids were put under, imo not enough was highlighted about the negative effects and how the adults around the kids failed them - lots of "well, look how successful they turned out!". And generally letting a lot of producers and execs off the hook. I dunno, it played very safe.
