Two longtime partners travel across the country on their way to the birth of their child via surrogate. It’s supposed to be a babymoon for Wyatt and Biz, but nothing about their trip is as carefree as Biz had hoped it would be or as structured as the plans Wyatt had made for it. Through multiple detours and bumps along the way, can this couple—so excited and yet so anxious about becoming parents—weather their own doubts and issues and reconnect with each other?

Highlights for me:
  • Biz’s energy
  • Biz’s exuberant and close-knit Italian family
  • The father figures
  • Matilda, the dog
  • The epilogue

What didn’t work as well for me:
  • Despite Biz’s repeated attempts to talk openly with Wyatt, Wyatt continually avoids deep conversations or ones that would potentially include conflict. Wyatt avoids these types of conversations so much that Biz tiptoes around him regarding major things that impact their lives.
  • Wyatt understandably has issues through which he is trying to work, but he also has a tendency to make everything about himself.
  • I would have loved to have dived deeper into any of the locations where the couple stops along the way.
  • After experiencing the road trip with them, I questioned how—especially with the stress that comes along with a baby—these two mean would successfully connect and have a healthy relationship in the future. (Thankfully the epilogue shows a happy family.)

I received an advance copy of the book from Berkley and NetGalley. All review opinions are my own.

Wyatt and Biz are getting ready to become daddies for the first time, having used Mackenzie as their egg donor and Flora as their surrogate. However, they have hit a bump in their relationship. Wyatt isn't sure he is ready to be married. They have been fighting lately and they haven't been intimate in a while. So, they head out on a babymoon road trip to be together before the baby arrives.
This trip has so many ups and downs, and moments that I laughed out loud (Stephen, the cat, for one). I love how the pair loves books, has trust issues, fears, goofy traits, and more. Biz comes from a big Italian family with loving parents, and Wyatt comes from a broken family. Together, they search for answers and how to find each other again.
Heartwarming and funny, too!

REVIEW: The Bump ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 (4.5)

Wyatt and Biz have been together for over ten years. They decide they are ready for the next step and want a baby. After much planning, they have a surrogate in California who will be having their child soon. Instead of just flying there for the birth, the guys decide to make a babymoon road trip out of it. Everything is planned and ready until it isn't.

The Bump was a perfect heartfelt, sweet, and funny story. In a dual POV, we learn through our main characters, Wyatt and Biz, how they are both feeling about becoming dads soon. Even though they have been together for so long, they have their troubles together. They disagree about marriage, they are nervous about truly communicating together, and they are both secretly fearful of becoming bad dads. I really like a switch-up with a romance of sometimes having an established couple like them who have some rocky moments to go through. Their relationship felt very authentic, and you could tell that deep down, they both really loved each other. Wyatt and Biz were definitely different from one another, but they both brought so much heart and laughter to this book.

I really love the different family dynamics and struggles throughout The Bump. There was a great deal of variety and representation as well. I really loved that this book presented surrogacy and gay adoption in such a positive light.

The only tiny thing I didn’t like about this story is the fact that there was a point when too much was going on at the same time. I get this is supposed to be stressful and chaotic, but sometimes it can feel too overwhelming.

Overall, I really loved The Bump. It was a great contemporary romance with so much love and fun throughout. I can’t wait to read Sidney Karger’s other novel, Best Men.

Thank you, Netgalley and Berkley Publishing Group, for the free advanced copy for my honest review!

THE BUMP is a story about two dads-to-be who embark on a cross-country road trip/babymoon but end up unearthing some issues along the way. biz and wyatt are pretty different people, but that hasn't been much of an issue throughout their relationship—until this road trip sheds a light on them. they're committed to being parents and to each other, but their communication leaves a lot to be desired and as their trip stops going as planned, they have no choice but to communicate with each other. if the miscommunication trope isn't your thing, this book might not be for you. i don't have any strong feelings about the trope, but this book really put that to the test. regardless of that, i still really enjoyed it and would recommend it!

read if you like:
- very gay road trips
- opposites attract
- relationship in trouble
- lots of baby talk

thanks to netgalley and harper collins UK for the advanced copy! THE BUMP comes out may 21st in the US and june 6th in the UK.

I received a free advance reader's copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own.

A feel-good story about a couple's journey to parenthood.

Wyatt and Biz are expecting their child to be born soon, and so embark on an epic babymoon road trip. They have a number of places to check out on their way out to California where their surrogate lives, but in the meantime why not have a little fun? But things don't always work out the way we plan them to, and perhaps that's symbolic of what they should expect in parenthood. Written with joy and love and a decent dose of drama, this is a heart-warming road trip story that'll have you rooting for these characters.

It was such a pleasure to read this book. Surrogacy journeys for two dads-to-be isn't something found in fiction all too often, and those that do exist are usually filled with tales of terror that really make the whole surrogacy industry look like something to be weary of. This book removes those misconceptions and paints a truly honest look at what the process looks like from the point of view of the dads. While every journey is different, it's a step in the right direction in terms of representation for how these stories are told. I hope to see more stories told in this stage of life for LGBTQ families, as they are few and far between.

Absolutely loved this one. You should definitely give this one a read and experience these characters' journey to parenthood.
