Weird in a mostly good way. Great witch craft and appalachia vibes. Funky pacing that sometimes hurt the overall story.

Mostly vibes, woodsy

Enjoyed the frantic runaround in trying to find answers for Motheater's past before the mountain goes off; in the franticness though it was often repeated how important Kire was to Motheater and I would've liked to be shown that more than told, by the end I was tired of hearing about the mountain

Rating mostly for concept and originality, as well as a few knock-down, drag-out phrasings that were perfect and moving. HOWEVER:
- Parts of the plot felt weirdly draggy. Not sure if it was the pacing or the framing, but it left me feeling "meh."
- The romance fell flat for me. It felt kind of forced and weird and I didn't feel the chemistry.
- I wanted a little bit more of "something to say."
I think the mountain kind of being the antagonist while the pipeline just explodes in the background makes me feel like the author pulled a punch.

What if Old Gods of Appalachia was through a queer femme lens? While I have been yelling about this book nonstop since I started reading, I don’t know how to talk about it without feeling like I’m overselling it. After I finished it I held it to my chest for 5 minutes just to sit with it for a while. Motheater is definitely the most annotated read in my collection. It’s not perfect, no book is, but I was moved in such a unique way. It’s beautiful and haunting and queer and wonderful.

Please read this book and talk to me about it.

For a book of this length it was weirdly rushed. Relationships and revelations never felt earned, and there was little tension or real conflict. A shame. I liked the prose style though.
