After reading the first two Dune books, I had high hopes for this one. The beginning started out decently but, by about halfway, I felt that the story and the characters degraded significantly. I was, specifically, disappointed in Leto's character progression and how his storyline ended up overshadowing everyone else's storyline. I was also disappointed with the sideways shunting of Paul when he started interacting with Leto and how they made Paul out to be weak for not wanting the date that Leto chose. I would not have wanted that, either, and I think Paul was braver for refusing his "date" than Leto was for "accepting" it. In the end, I do not think I would read this particular book again and this book did not excite me to continue on in the series.

Not as good as Messiah or the original dune, but really solid and constantly interesting, really excited about the next book.
Ranking: Messiah > Dune > Children
I really love the concepts presented in this book. If I have any major complaints or problems with the book, I would say I only am really very slightly disappointed by how Ghanima gets what feels like significantly less development than Leto, which makes sense because the direction of the story and Ghanima serves her role in the story incredibly well, she isn't poorly written or anything like that, I think their dynamic is great, it's just the slightest bit disappointing coming off the expectation/pitch of "Paul's Twin Children."
I love the way the story expands after Paul has left the picture. I love seeing the conclusion to Paul's story, and the way in which Frank Herbert is able to setup the next stage of the story outside the shadow of Paul, Muad'dib, the fool saint, when his character is practically is synonymous with Dune and Messiah is masterfully done. Leto is a worthy successor to the protagonist role and delivers a brilliant new take on a ruler in the Dune universe.

Did not care one bit for any of the characters. Every Atreides being this always composed, never show any emotion type (outside of Alia sometimes) is really boring to me.
If this book had some chapters from Paul’s perspective, I think his confrontation with Leto would’ve been more impactful
