This was a beautiful, poignant, and incredibly well-written collection. It made me think, it made me feel, and it made me want to explore the author's other works.

This is a excellent little book. Simpson's prose is lyrical and her verse is prosaic, all settling into a bubbling brook of sarcastic, fast-moving storytelling. She writes both earnestly and ironically about feeling a need to perform her indigenousness for other white people and for herself, about life in the suburbs, about relationships on social media, and about CanLit. All ruminating on impossible situation of growing up in a post-colonial society with so few answers for how to feel, how to live, how to co-exist.

I’m not entirely sure how to rate this, cause it’s not in my favorite genre of books, meaning I have biases, but I think it’s probably pretty well done for the genre it lives within.

I picked up the audiobook first as I was going for a run/walk and was looking for an interesting book by an indigenous author for a fall 2022 bingo challenge on instagram. This seemed like it was rated highly on Goodreads, and my library had both the audiobook and e-book available. However I made a pretty big error in not reading the synopsis or taking a look at the ebook prior to starting listening and going for my walk…so I found the book very confusing! It’s a collection of poems, songs and short stories, and to be honest when just listening and not reading, the transitions are confusing and unclear. I decided to stop listening half way and switch to the e-book. I then re-read some of the e-book I had already listened to, and finished reading the book in e-book form. Once I “got” what I was listening to, I found it a LOT less confusing (ie. no confusion) and found it much more enjoyable (although heartbreaking at times). I appreciate the authors viewpoint and would recommend the e-book or physical form but NOT the audiobook (unless you are following along with the book hah!).
