I’m not entirely sure how to rate this, cause it’s not in my favorite genre of books, meaning I have biases, but I think it’s probably pretty well done for the genre it lives within.

I picked up the audiobook first as I was going for a run/walk and was looking for an interesting book by an indigenous author for a fall 2022 bingo challenge on instagram. This seemed like it was rated highly on Goodreads, and my library had both the audiobook and e-book available. However I made a pretty big error in not reading the synopsis or taking a look at the ebook prior to starting listening and going for my walk…so I found the book very confusing! It’s a collection of poems, songs and short stories, and to be honest when just listening and not reading, the transitions are confusing and unclear. I decided to stop listening half way and switch to the e-book. I then re-read some of the e-book I had already listened to, and finished reading the book in e-book form. Once I “got” what I was listening to, I found it a LOT less confusing (ie. no confusion) and found it much more enjoyable (although heartbreaking at times). I appreciate the authors viewpoint and would recommend the e-book or physical form but NOT the audiobook (unless you are following along with the book hah!).

“i'm just going to sit here past late the stars don't care at what cost you breathe while i whisper a song
"this accident of being lost””

after they stole you & you fought your way out, no one was going to fuck with you ever again. get your own gun. set your own net. shoot your own moose. get two husbands & a wife & make them all feel insane with good love. give birth to a nation in an inglorious way, crawling through feces & urine & dirt & the bloody underbelly of betrayal.

A really strong collection, enjoyed on audiobook. Leanne Betasamosake Simpson's voice guided me through this and I found it insightful and painful at times. It's deceptively simple, but very layered and full of meaning. And feelings. Some of the stories feel like vulnerable letters with fictionalized elements, but very *true*.

I do want to acknowledge that once again, I probably didn't understand everything, like I said in my review for Noopiming: The Cure for White Ladies. But I was very happy to listen to it! And will most likely listen to it again and again.

I got lost in this book - a short but gorgeous collection of bold, beautiful words on a page.
