I don't read a lot of mysteries, and if not for my interest in Iceland itself, I don't know if I would have liked this book as much as I did. But it certainly kept me wanting to read.

The book starts off at a good pace. The reader is made acquainted with all the characters, a bit of mystery about the circumstances surrounding the plot is sprinkled here and there. The sub plot involving the protagonists son seemed a bit out of place, but understandable if there’s going to be more instalments in the series. I did find the book starts to get a little slow towards the end. It could’ve closed off earlier if not for the sub plot involving the son. There’s lots and lots of historical information thrown about involving sorcery and witchcraft most of which I glossed over. But others might be interested in the level of detail so I understand their place in the story.

I really liked the little stories historic reference folklore in it it was a bit confusing cuz I didn't use a highlighyer I would advice u to use one if u plan on reading it Honestly I wanted the murderer to be some witch who murdered cuz they didnt want the truth to go out or something unfortunately it wasn't that it was a mid book in my opinion I don't have strong feelings bout this book i didn't hate it nor did I love it it was a decent read
for some reason, all though the subject matter is far from typical cozy fare, this felt a bit like a cozy mystery? the investigator is an outsider who learns a lot throughout the case - sometimes it feels like you're being beat over the head with the author's research a bit. it was interesting to learn about icelandic culture and history throughout the story, but all the characters feel kinda cliche/one-note. overall, not a bad little mystery, but i probably won't read more in the series.
